Elephant Steps
by Emma Elisabeth Murphy
Even the wisest of creatures
tramples the life that surrounds.
When does the heaviness of
stability become the burden of
unasked for power?
We go about our days as
kind as we can be. Tethered
roots feeding the unknown –
still, death lingers at every
stomp of the foot. + We forget,
for just a moment, the precious
craft of caring for another.
Even the wisest of creatures
affects the hearts that surround,
for better or worse – leaving
only a cavernous footprint
where four pillars once stood.
